Ernest Thompson - The Little Rosebud Casket

Published September 9, 1924

Ernest Thompson sings "The Little Rosebud Casket", accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica. From the original 78rpm disk, which was recorded on September 9th, 1924.

The song was originally written in 1870 by the Boston songwriting and music publishing team of Louis P. Goullaud and Edward W. White (as "Little Rosewood Casket") but has become a folk standard and exists in many versions.

Here are the lyrics as they appear on this recording (as far as I can make out):

There's a little Rosebud casket
Sitting on the marble stand
There's a package of love letters
Written by my sweetheart's hand.

Go and bring them to me, brother
Come and sit beside my bed
Lie your head upon my pillow
While my aching heart grows dead.

Read them gently all to me, brother
Read them til I fall asleep
Fall asleep to wake with Jesus
Dearest brother, do not weep.

Last Sunday I saw him riding
With a lady by his side
And I thought I heard him tell her
That she soon would be his bride.

I've seen him coming up to the pathway,
Brother, meet him at the door
Tell him that I will forgive him
If he'll court the girl no more

When I'm dead and in my coffin
And my friends are gathered around
And my narrow grave is ready
In some haunted churchyard ground.

There's a little Rosebud casket
Sitting on the marble stand
There's a package of old letters
Written by my true love's hand.
